Columbus -- The Republican head of the Ohio House said Dec. 1 that the chamber is preparing to launch a task force to further study the legalization of marijuana for medicinal uses.
House Speaker Cliff Rosenberger (R-Clarksville) told reporters that an announcement was forthcoming on the new panel, marking a next step in lawmakers' consideration of medical marijuana, following last month's defeat of a constitutional amendment to legalize and regulate the drug for medical and recreational purposes.
The new panel would "go out into the communities, talk to both sides of the issue and make sure we try to coalesce and make sure that we get the right things done here in the legislature," Rosenberger said.
Last month, the head of the group behind last month's failed marijuana amendment said backers would pursue a new ballot issue in 2016 that would include medical and personal use, a "free market" approach and home-grown plants without state permits.
ResponsibleOhio Executive Director Ian James also said, in what he called "An Open Letter to Ohioans," that the group was considering the shortcomings of last month's Issue 3 and would make changes to ensure future voter support.
