Marijuana Policy Project’s (MPP) Coalition to Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol is lacking the funds necessary to continue working to get recreational marijuana on the November 2018 ballot in Michigan, and it is calling on donors to help it raise an additional $200,000 by the end of the week to avoid suspending the drive, according to an email from Regulate Michigan’s Finance Director Robin Schneider.
The campaign needs to collect 366,000 signatures in support of the legalization initiative by Nov. 22 to get it included on Michigan’s November 2018 ballot, and the project is 75 percent completed already, per Schneider’s email.
“Eighty to ninety percent of the signatures that we’re collecting are from paid petition gatherers, so the campaign has expenses. For that alone, [expenses] are roughly $50,000 every week. It is an extremely expensive endeavor,” said the campaign’s spokesperson Josh Hovey. “We have about four weeks left to do it, so we’re just asking everyone to help us make sure we get across the finish line and that we can actually get on the ballot and win in November 2018."
Donations can be made on MPP’s website during the week of Sept. 18 to help prevent the suspension of the campaign.
