2016 brought many changes for the cannabis industry. Overnight in November, the total number of states with legal medical or adult-use programs jumped to 35. The first cannabis-connected company was listed on the New York Stock Exchange, and the DEA relaxed rules surrounding cultivation of marijuana for official medical studies.

After making big bets on pot, Scotts Miracle-Gro Co. has seen its shares soar 31 percent to a record this year as polls indicate California, Massachusetts, Maine, Nevada and Arizona are poised to approve referendums dramatically expanding legal U.S. cannabis use.

9. Ohio Releases Cultivator Rules for Medical Marijuana Program


Ohio will license 12 large growers and six smaller cultivators for its new medical marijuana industry and require them to be ready to grow marijuana within nine months of getting their initial licenses, according to cultivator rules unveiled Tuesday.

Licensed cultivators will be required to demonstrate they have adequate capital funding, quality assurance and security plans, and test their product through a qualified laboratory before packaging and distributing the drugs, the rules show.

8. Fla. Legislation Delays Medical Marijuana Amendment


Thanks to nearly 75 percent of people in the state of Florida voting 'yes' to medical marijuana, legislators are now stumped with ideas to try and make it accessible throughout the state. Due to the concerns of abuse and commercialization of medical marijuana, the lawmakers have delayed the bill for six months and the amendment would not be approved or added to the Florida Constitution until late 2017 or not until early 2018.
