There were 362,000 people arrested for cannabis possession in the U.S. in 2019, as the federal government spends $33 billion each year prosecuting the drug war with Black people 3.64 times more likely to be arrested for cannabis-related offenses compared to whites.

Even as cannabis legalization continues to spread throughout the U.S., law enforcement agents still arrest hundreds of thousands of people for cannabis-related offenses each year in the U.S. Despite similar rates of cannabis use, Blacks (with a past-month cannabis use rate of 12.8%) are nearly four times more likely than whites (10.6% past-month cannabis use rate) to be arrested for cannabis. American Indian (15.1%), Hispanic/Latino (9.9%), Pacific Islander (8.2%), and Asian (5.8%) demographics also use cannabis at somewhat similar rates.
