Since Colorado and Washington launched adult-use cannabis sales in 2014, states have generated more than $15 billion in adult-use cannabis tax revenue, according to an analysis from the Marijuana Policy Project. In 2022, states collectively brought in about $3.77 billion in cannabis tax revenue exclusively from adult-use sales, representing a slight decrease from $3.86 billion in 2021. The decrease was mainly in mature markets; however, despite the dip, each state's 2022 tax revenue still exceeded pre-COVID figures.
