Medical cannabis dispensaries are banned in many places in California, and labelled a detriment to communities.
But the reality of regulated dispensaries in the Bay Area is far different. Medical cannabis businesses are among the most giving, community-minded groups in the cities and counties that regulate them — engaging in vastly more philanthropy that the average retail clothing store, liquor store, pharmacy or bank.
On Friday, two Berkeley dispensaries answered a distress call from the Berkeley Police Department’s Toys for Tots program, donating two full vans-worth of toys to East Bay kids this Christmas.
It took six detectives to load in the several thousand dollars-worth of toys bought by Berkeley Patients Group and CBCB of Berkeley — two leading dispensaries.
