Framingham, Mass., Voters to Face Ballot Questions on Recreational Marijuana

Residents supported legalizing recreational marijuana in the state election last year, and as a result must pass a ballot question to put any significant restrictions on the industry, per state law.

FRAMINGHAM – In November, voters will be asked whether they want to increase taxes on recreational marijuana businesses, empower city councilors to limit the number of recreational marijuana shops in Framingham, or do both.

Selectmen voted unanimously Tuesday night to place two separate questions on the Nov. 7 ballot, when residents will elect a mayor, a City Council and a School Committee.

The first question would place a 3 percent local sales tax on recreational marijuana businesses. Combined with state taxes, the measure would establish a 20 percent tax rate for dispensaries operating in town.

The second question would give the City Council the option to limit the number of recreational marijuana operations here. The ballot question itself would enact no limits, but rather empower the council to do so.
