NEW ORLEANS - City councilwoman Susan Guidry will introduce proposed legislation to give police greater discretion in marijuana possession cases, according to a news release.

?Guidry will discuss the proposed changes at a council meeting on January 27.

?According to Guidry's news release, presently police can use their discretion to issue a summons instead of making an arrest for a first-time possession offense.
?
?Guidry's proposal would extend the discretion to subsequent offenses for simple possession of marijuana.
?
?Guidry said that since the previous ordinance, the summons rate for first time possession of marijuana is at 70 percent.
