Lansing's Medical Marijuana Ordinance on Hold Due To Petition Drive

Lansing Votes turned in more than 6,500 petitions to the city clerk Friday afternoon, claiming the ordinance will force 70% of dispensaries to close.

LANSING, Mich. (WSYM) - Lansing's medical marijuana ordinance is on hold because of a petition drive aimed at getting it repealed. A group called Lansing Votes turned in more than 6,500 petitions to the city clerk Friday afternoon. The group claims the ordinance will force 70% of dispensaries to close, leaving some patients with no legal way to obtain medical marijuana. The ordinance caps the number of medical marijuana licenses at 25.

City Clerk Chris Swope says the City Charter gives him 15 days to determine if the petition is "sufficient and proper." If it is, the City Council can either vote to repeal the ordinance or put the it on the ballot in 2018.
