TALLAHASEE, Fla., Feb. 29, 2024 – PRESS RELEASE – A coalition representing Florida’s leading cannabis operators—also known as Medical Marijuana Treatment Centers (MMTCs)—announced Feb. 29 the formation of the Florida Medical Marijuana Trade Association (FMMTA). With a mission to advance patient-centric marijuana policy and common-sense cannabis business regulations in Florida, FMMTA will work to ensure the nation’s largest medical cannabis market will continue growing and thriving for the benefit of all key stakeholders.
FMMTA will advocate for the state’s MMTCs by promoting pro-patient and pro-business policies and regulatory initiatives, fostering collaboration and best practice sharing, and promoting education, training and public awareness for the many benefits of medical cannabis. FMMTA will also provide valuable industry perspective for legislators on key issues, including its strong opposition to proposed THC potency limits.
“Enacting sensible legislation in Florida, one of the most populous states in the nation, is more important now than ever before,” said FMMTA President Chris Ferguson, former director of Florida’s Office of Medical Marijuana Use and current vice president at Verano. “Our members look forward to leveraging our deep collective experience on critical legislative and regulatory issues, including the proposed THC potency limits, in service of the state’s medical cannabis patients and operators.”
Based in Tallahassee, FMMTA is actively engaged in the legislative process throughout this session, advocating on behalf of Florida patients and the state’s medical marijuana business community. Led by Executive Director Dr. Shamarial Roberson and President Chris Ferguson, the association is comprised of leading MMTCs including AYR Wellness, Curaleaf, Fluent, Green Thumb Industries, Surterra, The Cannabist Company and Verano.
These member companies and their representatives bring a diverse array of expertise crucial for the coalition's success, spanning government relations, regulatory compliance, medicine and product development. This collaboration positions FMMTA as a key player in promoting accessible, sustainable and responsible medical cannabis policy and practice in Florida.
