Pennsylvania youngsters enduring severe health conditions should have access to medical marijuana as early as this summer, although sick adults in the commonwealth face a longer wait, state health secretary Karen Murphy said Wednesday.
She said state officials are accelerating access for sick kids whose families were ”instrumental” in the state law allowing the therapy, which Gov. Tom Wolf signed April 17. The state Department of Health should have temporary regulations complete by late this year before it finalizes more permanent rules for the drug within 18 to 24 months, Ms. Murphy said.
For minors with one of 17 serious conditions, initial regulations expected in July will let caregivers obtain medical marijuana in other states and bring it to Pennsylvania before legal cultivation begins in the commonwealth, according to the health department. The designated ailments include cancer, autism, Crohn’s disease and epilepsy.
