The Iowa Medical Cannabis Board recommended adding post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and intellectual disability with aggression to the state’s list of qualifying conditions at a meeting Nov. 1.

The board rejected opioid dependency and Alzheimer’s disease due to concerns about a lack of studies or other evidence that medical cannabis could help those conditions, according to a Des Moines Register report.

Now, the Iowa Board of Medicine must agree with adding PTSD and intellectual disability to the state’s qualifying conditions before they can be officially approved, the news outlet reported.

Iowa has more than 3,800 patients registered in its medical cannabis program, as well as more than 850 health care providers who can recommend the drug to patients, according to the Des Moines Register.
