New ASTM International Cannabis Standard Will Help Cultivation Facilities Establish Cleaning Procedures

The new standard is soon to be published as D8219.

W. CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa., Jan. 16, 2019 – PRESS RELEASE – A new ASTM International standard will help cannabis cultivation centers to address cleaning and disinfection policies. The new standard (soon to be published as D8219) was developed by ASTM’s committee on cannabis (D37).

“Like food safety requirements before it, the standardization of proper disinfection techniques will ensure cultivation facilities are providing a clean and safe product to consumers,” says ASTM International member Bernie Lorenz, Ph.D., chief science officer, ProKure.

“Proper cleaning and disinfecting techniques are incredibly important at this critical point in the cannabis industry’s development,” says Lorenz. “A quick online search will find numerous articles highlighting moldy and pesticide-ridden cannabis products in the market. Consumer health and safety has never been more vital and the industry is well past due for cleaning and disinfection standardization to ensure this.”

Spivey notes that the standard will be most beneficial to cannabis cultivators, state and federal regulators looking to standardize operational procedures for consumer safety.
