TRENTON — A south Jersey teenage girl with autism and potentially life-threatening epilepsy may legally consume edible marijuana at her school every day, according to a policy school administrators adopted Wednesday night to comply with a new state law.
The Larc School in Bellmawr appears to be first school in the nation to permit medical marijuana on campus, according to executive director Susan Weiner.
The school's board and administrators wanted to act quickly, Weiner said, to comply with the law Gov. Chris Christie signed Monday that requires all school districts in New Jersey to adopt rules that permit children with developmental disabilities to consume cannabis oil or another edible cannabis product.
"Clearly this has been in discussion for a quite a while and we are happy to accommodate and certainly want to help our families," Weiner said Thursday. "We were hoping (Christie) would sign this and we have been preparing for this to happen.
