The Louisiana House approved legislation May 31 that would expand access to the state’s medical cannabis program, sending the bill to Gov. John Bel Edwards, according to The Advocate.

House Bill 819, sponsored by Rep. Larry Bagley (R-Stonewall), would allow any doctor to recommend medical cannabis for any debilitating condition.

Under the state’s existing medical cannabis program, which was approved in 2016, only specially licensed doctors can recommend medical cannabis for one of 14 qualifying conditions.

The House sent H.B. 819 to Bel Edwards with a 74-16 vote, The Advocate reported.

The Louisiana House approved H.B. 819 on May 15, but the Senate passed the legislation with several amendments, sending it back to the House for final consideration.
