Salinas -- Seeking to replace an active cut flower growing operation with medical marijuana, the first cannabis cultivation use permit bid in unincorporated Monterey County is headed before the Planning Commission this week.
Applicant Green Valley Floral is asking permission to convert existing greenhouses and warehouses currently producing roses, Gerber daisies and other cut flowers at its Old Stage Road site outside Salinas into a commercial medical cannabis cultivation and nursery operation once all other required state and county permits and licenses are acquired. No marijuana is currently being grown there, according to a staff report.

The proposal calls for leasing the site to LGS Farms, Inc., which would operate the cannabis business. The plan envisions 101,000 square feet of grow canopy area for cultivation and 25,200 square feet of canopy for nursery operations. Drying and trimming would occur within an existing metal warehouse building.
