Santa Cruz County Signs off on Cannabis Production Rules

The move will legitimize businesses who are working with a temporary state license.


Anxiously anticipated rules to license commercial cannabis cultivation and production in unincorporated Santa Cruz County are moving forward after a landmark vote.

On Tuesday, county officials unanimously signed off on two proposed ordinances to license the local pot producers to step into the new commercial market. Now approved in concept, the rules are on track to be adopted at the board’s May 8 meeting before they would take effect June 8.

The vote came as a relief to many in the local cannabis industry whose temporary state licenses that allow them to legally operate are soon to expire.

“I will have to close my doors for a period of time as it is now,” Robert Zaremba, who operates a Ben Lomond-based pot distribution company, told the board.
