Farmers are railing against a county-wide program that imposes heavy fines on growers who are suspected of cultivating commercial cannabis without a permit.
When a cannabis farmer receives an “abatement” notice — or a message from the Humboldt County Planning Department saying to close an agricultural operation — the grower has 10 days to either shut down shop or successfully contest the abatement. If they don’t do either, they incur a $10,000 penalty per violation each day.
