Ohio Ballot Board Approves Second Medical Marijuana Initiative

The Ohio Ballot Board unanimously approved the format of a proposed constitutional amendment legalizing medical marijuana and hemp Thursday, clearing the way for supporters to gather signatures to put the issue on the Nov. 8 ballot.

Supporters of the Medicinal Cannabis and Industrial Hemp Amendment now must gather 305,591 valid signatures of registered voters and include at least 44 of the 88 Ohio counties.

This is the second medical-marijuana issue cleared for an attempt to get on the ballot. Two weeks ago, the board approved a medical-marijuana-only issue backed by the Marijuana Policy Project, a national advocacy organization. Neither issue would allow marijuana use for recreational purposes.

The two ballot issues might compete with medical-marijuana legislation unveiled Wednesday by Ohio House Speaker Cliff Rosenberger, R-Clarksville, and other Republican and Democratic legislators.
