Rep. Bryan Terry and Sen. Steve Dickerson plan to file a bill next year that would allow the use and study of medical marijuana.
The two Republican legislators have titled the bill the Tennessee Responsible Use of Medicinal Plants Act (or TRUMP Act), according to a release.
“The name was no accident—it’s more branding than anything,” Dickerson told the Post. “Most of the opponents of this bill will likely be from our own party. We wanted to get the Republican party’s attention.”
The name seems to reference President Trump’s apparent shift toward more lenient legislation regarding cannabis. Trump said earlier this month that he “probably will end up supporting” a bill that would lift the federal marijuana ban, freeing state governments to have the final word on the substance. In May he signed the federal Right to Try act, which allows terminally ill patients to try any medicines that have passed phase one of Food and Drug Administration trials.
The act mirrors a state bill of the same name passed by the Tennessee General Assembly in 2015.
