Industry Experts to Gather in Oakland, Calif., at Cannabis 2018 to Share Cultivation Insights

Cannabis Business Times' three-day conference will cover everything from cultivation to business management and provide plenty of industry networking opportunities.

Keynote Speakers

Cannabis 2018 will offer more than 1,600 minutes of educational programs, March 12-14, in Oakland, Calif., covering everything from technical cultivation topics to business management advice to help you take your operation to the next level. Here are some of the can’t-miss sessions.

Monday:

• The Golden (State) Rules: A Q&A with Leading California Cannabis Lawyers and Experts, 1:30-3:00 p.m.
In a workshop-type setting, California lawyers and experts Nicole Howell Neubert, Ariel Clark, Omar Figueroa and Hezekiah Allen will share insight into California’s ever-changing state and regional regulatory cannabis landscape and what you need to know to prepare for succeeding in the country’s largest cannabis market. Not only will you be able to ask questions of these legal and regulatory experts, but you will also learn from other attendees’ questions as they prepare their businesses for entering the legal, regulatory and business landscape in The Golden State.

• Environmental Sustainability and the Cannabis Industry, 4:30-6:00 p.m.
Those leading the march toward improving environmental sustainability of the industry—including Cannabis Certification Council’s Ben Gelt, Yerba Buena’s Casey Rivero and Resource Innovation Institute’s Derek Smith—will share the latest emerging legal and regulatory trends that are sure to impact your business and its practices, current and forthcoming standards and strategies for improving your environmental footprint.

Tuesday:

• Keynote Session: What I Learned from My First Year as a Large-Scale Cultivator, 10:10-11:00 a.m.
Longtime cultivator Scott Reach, one of the most respected names in cannabis breeding and cultivation, will present his unique viewpoint as a grower who built a state-of-the art cultivation operation, where he has been hands-on with every aspect of his new facility, from design and construction to daily operations and maintenance.

• Keynote Panel: Breeding Cannabis Varieties, 11:15 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.
Some of the top breeding experts in the world—Robert C. Clarke, Mel Frank, David Holmes and Mojave Richmond—will share advice on the most important aspects of breeding new varieties, including breeding for indoor strains vs. outdoor strains, important traits to breed for and more.

• New Research Results: Understanding, Modulating and Optimizing Drying and Curing, 3:30-4:30 p.m.
The lack of data on drying and curing prompted OutCo to research what is happening during these processes. In this session, OutCo’s Dr. Allison Justice and Dr. Markus Roggen will present their research of how to affect and control the chemical makeup of flower, new protocols to monitor the drying and curing of cannabis flowers to be able to modulate the terpene and cannabinoid profiles in strain offerings, and their latest findings in this exciting field of post-harvest cannabis research.

Wednesday:

• What Retailers Want from Cultivators, 11:50 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Cannabis retail veterans—Guild Enterprises’ Claudio Miranda and Diego Pellicer-Colorado’s Nick Jack—will share tricks and tips on how to get your products into dispensaries, and how to form strong relationships with retailers and avoid common pitfalls that will turn them off.

• Quest for the Golden Fiber, 2:00-3:00 p.m.
“Quest for the Golden Fiber” documents Rob Clarke’s travels in Anatolian Turkey in search of vintage hemp textiles and the women who wove them. After the Bay Area premiere showing, Clarke will entertain questions from the audience about traditional hemp cultivation and other topics of mutual interest.
