ATLANTA — Most voters in Georgia now say that marijuana should be legal for recreational purposes, according to an exclusive poll commissioned by 11Alive News and conducted by SurveyUSA.

According to the poll, 55 percent of Georgia voters believe that recreational marijuana should be legalized, while 35 percent said it should remain against the law.

Two years ago, 48 percent supported legalizing recreational marijuana. At that time, opposition was at 38 percent.

Medical marijuana has slowly expanded in Georgia in the past few years. The state's first medical marijuana bill was passed by the General Assembly in 2015 and covers more than 15 other medical conditions.

New legislation designed to "significantly increase" access to New Jersey's medical marijuana program would allow more dispensaries and cultivation centers to open and permit more medical professionals to refer their patients, NJ Advance Media has learned.

The bill was introduced Tuesday by Sens. Joseph Vitale, D-Middlesex, Nicholas Scutari, D-Union, and Declan O'Scanlon, R-Monmouth, in response to Gov. Phil Murphy's call to reform New Jersey's medical marijuana program. 

Vitale told NJ Advance Media the bill would allow the Department of Health to expand the medical marijuana program by issuing licenses to new dispensary operators to meet the increased patient demand.

 "It is our belief that this legislation will significantly increase access for patients, caregivers and providers, and additional forms of medical marijuana that may better suit a patient's need," Vitale said.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health approved temporary changes to the Commonwealth’s medical marijuana program on Monday that will add addiction to the list of qualifying conditions.

This new measure would allow people in recovery to apply for the program, which allows marijuana use for a treatment of a serious medical condition, as defined by the state's Medical Marijuana Law.

Pennsylvania Secretary of Health Dr. Rachel Levine said this form of treatment won’t be the first and only option for people in recovery, but it could be an option for some.

“It’s important to note that medical marijuana is not a substitute for proven treatments for opioid use disorder,” Levine said. “In Pennsylvania, medical marijuana will be available to patients if all other treatment fails, or if a physician recommends that it be used in conjunction with traditional therapies.”

Update on Construction of OneLeaf-Onyx

Phase 1 of the interior buildout, which is fully funded, will comprise approximately 16,500 sq. ft. and is anticipated to be completed by the end of this August. Upon completion of Phase 1, OneLeaf will submit an evidence package to Health Canada demonstrating its readiness to begin cultivating cannabis.
