SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham is launching a new effort to craft legislation that could legalize recreational marijuana sales next year.

The first-year Democratic governor announced Friday her recruitment of health, legal and fiscal policy experts to serve in a new discussion group that provides recommendations on state legalization.

Members of the group include Democratic and Republican legislators who sponsored unsuccessful legislation this year to authorize and tax recreational marijuana sales at state run stores. That proposal passed a House vote but stalled in the state Senate.

Gov. Phil Murphy said he will sign a measure on July 2 to dramatically expand the state’s medical marijuana program.

The move would mark a victory for cannabis and social justice advocates, especially after the governor and legislative leadership conceded in March that they did not have enough support for a cannabis-legalization bill to pass in the state Senate.

“On Tuesday, [First Lady Tammy Murphy] and I will join the Honig family in Freehold to sign the Jake Honig Compassionate Use Medical Cannabis Act into law,” Murphy tweeted on Friday. “We must continue to knock down barriers so that this life-changing medical treatment is affordable and accessible.

Since 2008, it’s been illegal to smoke indoors at most public places in Illinois. But smoking could once again be allowed at bars, restaurants, coffee shops and other businesses, even new cannabis smoke lounges and weed-friendly movie theaters and concert venues—if local officials approve that.

That’s under a largely overlooked provision of the new Illinois law legalizing recreational marijuana use and sales.

The law legalizing the recreational use of marijuana beginning Jan. 1 provides an exemption to the Smoke-Free Illinois Act that banned smoking at workplaces and most public places because of the health threat of secondhand smoke. A similar exemption already was in place for cigar lounges.

WASHINGTON — Republican Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley, along with Democratic Sens. Dianne Feinstein, of California, and Brian Schatz, of Hawaii, introduced a new bill that would expand medical research of marijuana and its compounds.

"The parents of children with severe epilepsy and other conditions are interested in cannabidiol to try to ease their children's symptoms. I understand their interest. Research is necessary to determine the potential medical value of cannabidiol, and wherever possible, the government should help facilitate the scientific research needed to give these parents the answers they need," Grassley said.
