SAN LEANDRO — The Davis Street Wellness Center has cleared one of the last obstacles needed to operate a medical marijuana dispensary next to the Davis Street Family Resource Center, an affiliated nonprofit well known in San Leandro for helping immigrant and low-income residents.
The San Leandro Board of Zoning Adjustments, by a 5-0 vote, approved a new set of conditions that the Davis Street Wellness Center must meet before it can open its medical marijuana dispensary in a Teagarden Street building owned by the Davis Street Family Resource Center. Zoning board members Catherine Vierra Houston and Rick Solis were absent.

The city initially outlined reasons for denying the project last month, but the zoning board approved Davis Street Wellness Center’s permit to operate a dispensary in the building. The zoning board then instructed city staff to write a new set of findings and conditions tied to the permit’s approval.
Those conditions include repaying a $500,000 federal government-backed loan given by the city to the Davis Street Family Resource Center in 2009. That money was used to buy its 44,024-square-foot headquarters building on Teagarden Street in 2010.
