Group: So Far, Only 10 Cannabis Patients for Every Dispensary in Oklahoma

OKLAHOMA CITY — Nearly two months in, Oklahoma's fledgling medical marijuana licensing steps are running pretty smoothly, but an unexpected glut of commercial applicants probably will doom many entrepreneurs, cannabis advocates said Wednesday.

“I don’t think anyone really anticipated that there would be this many applicants, but it just shows the intense level of interest in this industry,” said Bud Scott, executive director of the medical marijuana trade group New Health Solutions, Oklahoma, of the commercial licensing steps.

As of Oct. 15, Oklahoma Medical Marijuana Authority reported issuing 7,747 patient, 57 caregiver, 589 dispensary, 925 grower and 248 processing licenses, according to statistics released by the division. In all, 9,923 patients have applied for licenses, though many still are being processed.
