(NEWSCHANNEL 3) - The Michigan Board of State Canvassers will meet Thursday to decide if recreational marijuana will be added to the November ballot.

The Coalition to Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol (CRMLA) wants cannabis to be legal to those over age 21. They said they believe they have 25,000 more signatures than the 250,000 needed to get the measure added to the ballot.

So far, no group has come forward to challenge the current signatures collected, but the Detroit Free Press reports there are rumors the legislature could take up the marijuana issue, as a way to keep it off November's ballot.

If the Board of Canvassers approves the petition Thursday, the proposal would go to the legislature. Then the legislature can either vote on the issue and it would become law; the legislature can put up a competing ballot proposal; or they can do nothing, and the issue would be placed on the November ballot.
