Iowa lawmakers advanced legislation Wednesday allowing some critically ill Iowans to access medical cannabis products, though they dramatically scaled back the scope of the proposal.
In its original form, the bill would have granted access to individuals with a wide range of medical conditions, including cancer, AIDS or HIV, Hepatitis C, Crohn's disease, post-traumatic stress disorder and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
However, in order to ensure its passage, Rep. Guy Vander Linden, R-Oskaloosa, said legislators had to scale that back to include only intractable epilepsy, multiple sclerosis and cancer — and only if a doctor has determined that a patient has less than 12 months to live.
“It’s what we think we can get through the Legislature," Vander Linden said.
