The Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection (DCP) announced Nov. 1 that starting Dec. 1, 2023, adult-use cannabis transaction limits will increase, allowing consumers to purchase up to a half ounce of raw flower or its equivalent per transaction.
The limit for medical cannabis patients will remain unchanged at up to 5 ounces per month, and patients are not subject to individual transaction limits.
Regulators said in the announcement that the increase is based on an ongoing analysis of available supply and demand in Connecticut’s market. The transaction limits, established to ensure businesses can maintain an adequate supply for patients and adult-use consumers, will continue to be evaluated over time, according to the press release.
“DCP has continually reviewed available supply and demand since prior to the launch of the adult-use cannabis industry in January 2023,” DCP Commissioner Bryan Cafferelli said in a public statement. “As more retailers, production companies and other supply chain licensees have come online, the capacity of the industry has increased. We are confident this measured approach to adult-use sales has resulted in a healthy market for businesses, and a safe and fair marketplace for adult-use cannabis consumers and medical marijuana patients.”
Connecticut law allows adults to possess up to 1.5 ounces of cannabis as well as store up to 5 ounces in a locked container at home or during transport in a vehicle’s locked glovebox or trunk.
Consumers may purchase different types and different sizes of products together to reach the transaction limit of a half ounce of cannabis; this includes up to 14 prerolls that each weigh 1 gram, for example, or four to eight vape cartridges, which are typically sold in .5 milliliter and 1 milliliter sizes.
Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont signed the state’s adult-use cannabis legislation in June 2021, and the state’s retailers launched the first commercial sales in January 2023. At that time, the original transaction limits prohibited adult-use consumers from purchasing more than a quarter ounce of cannabis flower or its equivalent per transaction.
