Pueblo Cannabis Prohibition Initiative Defeated

Measure 200, which looked to boot recreational cannabis out of Pueblo County, is defeated 57-43.

Pueblo 111416

Cannabis is here to stay in Pueblo County, as residents voted in favor of the recreational cannabis industry by a wider margin than in the original Amendment 64 vote in 2012.

Over 57 percent of voters sided with the cannabis industry and voted against Measure 200, which aimed to repeal retail marijuana in one of the biggest hotbeds for outdoor cultivation. When the county voted on Amendment 64, which legalized recreational cannabis in the state of Colorado, 55.6 percent of voters were in favor of legalized adult-use.

“We are thrilled with the outcome of this vote, and it is our hope that Pueblo County can continue to be the pioneers of cannabis regulation, while providing a positive business climate for all industries while protecting our citizens,” said the Pueblo County Board of Commissioners in a statement.

Voter turnout was lower this year compared to 2012, when over 75,000 voters cast their ballots on Amendment 64. In 2016, just under 72,000 county residents voted on Measure 200.
