Planet 13 Nevada Consumption Lounge on the Brink of Becoming a Reality

Nevada regulators approved the state’s first three cannabis consumption lounges after announcing prospective license holders in November 2022.

Following the approval of Planet 13's prospective consumption lounge license by the Nevada Cannabis Compliance Board (CCB) in November 2022, the state has officially granted the company its license.

In addition to Planet 13, regulators also granted consumption lounge licenses to Cheyenne Medical in unincorporated Clark County and Sol Cannabis in Washoe Valley.

Planet 13, which dubs itself the largest dispensary in the world with its 112,000-square-foot SuperStore in Las Vegas, is known for creating consumer experiences.

The consumption lounge will be built into the Las Vegas SuperStore–adding to the company's vision of becoming a "one-of-a-kind cannabis destination where consumers can watch cannabis products being made, can purchase products, and can consume all under one roof," according to a company press release. The lounge will include live entertainment and is open for private events, brand launches and other events.

In addition to the SuperStore's immersive entertainment experiences, it also houses a 14,000-square-foot, customer-facing production facility where individuals can get a live view of in-house brands being made.

The consumption lounge is expected to be finished by Q1 2024 but will pend final approval from the county.

"Receiving this confirmation from the state allows us to move on to the final design and buildout of our consumption lounge," said Larry Scheffler, co-CEO of Planet 13. "The consumption lounge will be a huge step to unlocking the full potential of the SuperStore as a cannabis destination. It will give customers the ability to try products prior to buying, watch live entertainment, and enjoy food and drink in a social setting that matches Planet 13's incredible experiential design standard."

Consumption lounges in Nevada have been a long time coming.

CCB officials approved regulations governing consumption lounges in June 2022, roughly one year after former Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak signed legislation to legalize consumption lounges.

Approval on consumption lounges is a decision that was in limbo in Nevada for years, as lounges "showed promise as part of a Las Vegas ordinance back in 2017 and again in 2019, but due to setbacks and political debates from the rival gaming industry, the legislation never became a reality," Cannabis Business Times previously reported.
