Connecticut residents will be able to grow cannabis at home starting July 1, and regulators are urging those taking advantage of home cultivation to do so responsibly.

State law allows adults 21 and older to grow up to three mature and three immature plants, with a maximum of 12 plants per household.

The Department of Consumer Protection (DCP) has issued a statement to remind home growers to comply with all state laws and regulations, and to use safe cultivation practices.

“Adults who choose to grow their own cannabis should use safe and healthy gardening practices for growing any products they intend to consume,” DCP Commissioner Bryan Cafferelli said in a public statement. “Plants should also be kept indoors, out of reach and out of sight from children and pets.”

Cannabis grown in private residences must be grown in an indoor, secured and locked area that is not visible to the public, according to the DCP.

State law has allowed medical cannabis patients aged 18 and older to grow plants at home under the same rules since October 2021.

Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont signed Connecticut’s adult-use cannabis program into law in June 2021, and commercial adult-use cannabis sales launched in January 2023.

In its latest announcement, the DCP also urges cannabis consumers to consume responsibly by storing cannabis products in their original child-proof packaging in a locked area that is inaccessible to children and pets.
