Voters in Wichita Kansas voted by a margin of 54% to 45% to ease penalties for possessing small amounts of marijuana, according to a report by KSN.com.
"The proposed ordinance does not legalize marijuana. It makes first-time possession a criminal infraction with a $50 fine," reports KSN.
At the state level, marijuana possession is a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of up to $2,500 and a year in jail. Opponents of decriminalization argue that the city doesn't have "legal authority to adopt an ordinance that conflicts with state law," states KSN, and the Kansas Attorney General has threatened to sue the state, if the initiative passed.
