La Mesa is on the cusp of having several medical marijuana dispensaries, approved by voters in 2016, so now the city is trying to figure out how it can cash in on what it expects will be some lucrative ventures.
The city held a public cannabis taxation discussion on Feb. 28 hosted by HdL Companies, an outside consultant that will be helping the city make its way with the new type of job growth and tax revenue that dispensaries are expected to bring to La Mesa.
City Finance Director Sarah Bullock said the city will share feedback from that meeting with the City Council, which will hold budget discussions later this month.
The City Council could decide whether to put the tax measure on the ballot to let voters decide how La Mesa should move forward on taxing medical marijuana businesses.
