The Pennsylvania Department of Health has approved a Scranton company to begin growing and processing medical marijuana, an apparent rebuff of calls to revoke its license because of ties to a Minnesota company whose former employees are accused of smuggling drugs across state lines.
Pennsylvania Medical Solutions (PAMS) is one of six grower-processors whom the health department has so far deemed operational. Another six are expected to get the green light by the end of the year.

PAMS is also one of two grower applicants who earned permits in the northeast region of the state, which included the Lehigh Valley. Twenty-eight regional companies submitted applications, which included a nonrefundable $10,000 registration fee. Standard Farms of White Haven, Luzerne County, also received a permit and has already begun operations.
PAMS’ parent company is Vireo Health LLC, which operates existing medical marijuana businesses in New York and Minnesota. In February, Minnesota officials charged two ex-employees with illegally transporting $500,000 in medical cannabis oil while they worked for the company.
