Calif. 'Marijuana Czar' Lori Ajax Talks Marijuana Regulation


Eight months ago, Gov. Jerry Brown picked Lori Ajax to lead a new agency, the Bureau of Medical Marijuana Regulation. The former chief deputy director of the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control is now California's unofficial pot czar, leading efforts to craft a regulatory framework for medical cannabis by January 2018.

If California voters legalize marijuana via Proposition 64 on Tuesday, things will change dramatically for Ajax and her agency, which would be renamed the Bureau of Marijuana Control. The reconstituted bureau will oversee a new, bigger regulatory system that will be expected to start issuing marijuana business licenses in 2018.

Ajax recently shared some thoughts with The Recorder about what's happening with the bureau now and what's ahead. The interview was edited for clarity and length.
