Florida Sen. Janet Cruz and Rep. Adam Hattersley have introduced a bill that would allow veterans to obtain and renew their medical cannabis cards at no cost.

The legislation aims to offer veterans an alternative to opioids, and would be the first discount on medical cannabis in Florida, according to a local Bay News 9 report.

“Providing free medical marijuana cards for service-disabled veterans is a benefit that I hope will encourage alternative treatments and help address the opioid crisis facing veterans,” Cruz told the news outlet.

Florida has 1.5 million veterans, Bay News 9 reported. The bill has been filed for the 2020 legislative session, which kicks off in January.
