Tenn. Cities Feud State over Cannabis Ban


A new feud is shaping up in the state of Tennessee over cannabis, this time between state and local policies. Recently approved marijuana decriminalization ordinances in Memphis and Nashville conflict with Tennessee state drug laws and therefore may not be enforced, according to an opinion issued in November by the Office of the Attorney General. More to the point, state laws must be enforced despite local policies.

Similar marijuana ordinances, known as “Lowest Law Enforcement Priority” have been adopted by local jurisdictions in other states, several of which in recent years have legalized adult use of marijuana, such as California, Washington and Massachusetts.
