Editor's Note: Medical marijuana is going to be an ongoing issue in the workplace as employers grapple between the concepts of (and their legal right to enforce) drug free workplaces and their employees' health/wellness and personal rights. Medical marijuana has been deemed (by 23 states and D.C.) to be legal, and it is considered medication (and prescribed by doctors). But until marijuana is approved on a Federal level, gray areas will continue to confound these situations.
The Princeton University employee who was told he would lose his job if he participated in the state’s medical marijuana program has been placed on paid administrative leave until the sides can come to an agreement over “reasonable accommodations.”
Don DeZarn, an East Windsor resident, returned to work today at Princeton’s campus dining department for the first time in nearly two weeks, after he informed the university that he would be purchasing and using medical marijuana to treat symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease and post-traumatic stress disorder.
