A highly controversial bill to legalize recreational marijuana is floundering because of a lack of support in the General Assembly, legislators said Wednesday.
The measure is not expected to be on the agenda Friday in the legislature's judiciary committee — the last chance for a vote before the committee's deadline.
"It's clear at this point that there isn't support on the committee for it,'' said Rep. William Tong, a Stamford Democrat who co-chairs the committee. "It's not an open question. It's not ambiguous.''
One of the biggest obstacles has been opposition by Gov. Dannel P. Malloy, who has said repeatedly that he did not favor legalizing marijuana for recreational use. Lawmakers would have needed a two-thirds vote in both chambers to override a potential Malloy veto.
