Canada’s largest mental health and drug addiction treatment and research hospital has endorsed the legalization of marijuana.
The new proposal from the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, while much stricter than Colorado-style legalization, is groundbreaking, coming from a leader in the substance abuse prevention field.
“Based on a thorough review of the evidence, we believe that legalization combined with strict regulation of cannabis is the most effective means of reducing the harms associated with its use,” said Dr. Jargen Rehm, the director of the center’s Social and Epidemiological Research Department, in a news release.
The center is recommending that marijuana be distributed exclusively by government entities instead of private businesses.
