Breeder's Insights: Après

Après is a cross of White Runtz x Heatlocker. The final days of flower generally produce beautiful, dark purple spears with contrasting light orange stigmas.

Plant Physiology: The best phenotypes of Après render medium-sized plants that display a perfect 50/50 structure of the cultivar’s parental lineage (White Runtz x Heatlocker), not leaning too close to either side. Après has good internodal spacing but has a unique structure where the branches want to grow close together, requiring attention to either low-stress training or some early super cropping at the beginning of flower to help separate the branches. The final days of flower generally produce beautiful, dark purple spears with contrasting light orange stigmas. The trichome heads are so greasy that, when touched, they can make a pair of black gloves look like they have been dipped in oil.

Average Yield: Après is a moderate-yielding cultivar typically producing 55 to 60 grams per square foot indoors when given a light output of 800 to 1000 micromoles. Light-assisted greenhouses tend to yield around 45 to 50 grams per square foot.

Flowering Time: Après has a wide variety of finishing times depending on the phenotype. Phenotypes leaning toward Heatlocker can easily go 70-plus days while expressing Chem D traits of pure gasoline. Phenotypes leaning toward White Runtz, meanwhile, can finish as soon as 58 to 60 days.

Ideal Environmental Conditions: While Après is relatively easy to grow, it’s not easy to grow perfectly. Après prefers hot and humid conditions in veg (82 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit and 70% to 75% relative humidity), along with the first two weeks of flower, to achieve proper internodal spacing and vertical growth. Conversely, in flower, the cultivar prefers drier, cooler conditions to display its full terpene potential along with the beautiful colors she exhibits.

Recommended Input Conditions: At the beginning of flower, it’s important to keep your substrate electrical conductivity (EC) between 6 to 10 and steer the plant heavily toward generative growth using heavy dry backs. Once you are through day 28 , Après loves to continue heavy dry backs by lowering the substrate EC to 2 to 4, which is achieved by lowering your feed water EC. If you overfeed her, however, she won’t turn as purple as she’s capable of.

Integrated Pest Management Notes: Après tends to not have issues with pests and mold, provided that you keep her within the environmental parameters she needs to thrive. Some phenotypes of Après have shown signs of powdery mildew when grown in poorly controlled climates or greenhouses. These issues can be corrected by having a strict IPM program with multiple modes of action.

Cannabinoid Profile: Total THC 29.4%, CBG 0.188%, CBC 0.09%.

Terpene Profile: The top five terpenes in our favorite phenotype of Après are ocimene, myrcene, caryophyllene, linalool and limonene. Après gives off unique smells in the garden that differ from the dried flower. The diverse lineage of this cultivar renders an incredibly potent and unique flavor profile, with a nose dominated by sharp, sweet and sour notes reminiscent of roses, lilacs and candy over earthy, gassy and peppery undertones. When ground, strong, candied floral notes blossom into gas and earth, and these aromas translate well into the cultivar’s flavor.

Quality of High: Après has been described as delivering a relaxing body high, and the breeder recommends it for nighttime usage.
