The typically neutral Geneva, Switzerland, sounds ready to shed its neutrality and liberate cannabis.
More than a year after Switzerland decriminalized marijuana possession, Geneva’s authorities are mulling a “radical liberalisation of drug laws in the Swiss canton.” The effort stems from a desire to undercut the Swiss weed black market and to emulate the growing international trend of marijuana legalization.
According to the report, Geneva’s potential legal marketplace would mirror Spain’s by incorporating a cannabis club-style system. Moreover, local legislators in Geneva envision a “regulated, legal marketplace” intended to “stem the illicit sale of marijuana.”
Geneva’s push to progress is led by its Advisory Commission on Addiction, which seeks to launch a trial period of legalization.
