In the coming weeks, Gov. Eddie Calvo’s proposed bill to legalize marijuana, allowing adults to purchase pot recreationally, will make its way through the legislative process.
The governor submitted his measure, Bill 8-34, to the Guam Legislature on Tuesday, just a few weeks after first announcing his support to legalize and tax the drug, which is expected to open a new revenue stream for the government.
While it’s unclear how lawmakers will vote on the measure should it make its way to the Legislature’s session floor, one thing for certain is the strong opinions each will have.
“I’m sure everybody will have their own stake on it,” Minority Leader Sen. James Espaldon said. “I myself, I’m still going through it to understand the ramifications of it because it’s a big policy shift."
