Mississippians for Compassionate Care submitted more than enough signatures Sept. 4 to place a medical marijuana initiative on the state’s ballot next year.
The group submitted 105,686 signatures from registered voters to the secretary of state ahead of a Sept. 6 deadline to turn in at least 86,000 signatures, according to a Clarion Ledger report. The signatures are now pending state certification.
The Medical Marijuana 2020 campaign strives to pass an initiative that will allow doctors to recommend cannabis for certain conditions, including cancer, epilepsy, Parkinson’s and multiple sclerosis, among others, the Clarion Ledger reported. The Department of Health would be responsible for regulating the program and its related businesses under the initiative, which Jamie Grantham, a spokeswoman for Mississippians for Compassionate Care, is optimistic will pass.
“The polling is extremely positive,” Grantham told the Clarion Ledger. “It polls above 77 percent, with every age group, religious affiliation, political affiliation and other groups. Also, to that point, we saw the overwhelming support from the number of signatures we received."
