SARASOTA COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) - Sarasota County commissioners got an earful from the public after proposing a ban on the sale of recreational marijuana.
County commissioners say they're preparing for the future. They're anticipating a day when recreational marijuana could be approved by state lawmakers, and they want to be ready. Commissioners are worried about the impact recreational marijuana could have on the community.
"Look at the devastating negative impacts that it's had in other states,” said Commissioner Charles Hines.
For example, federal officials in Colorado report that the number of traffic fatalities linked to marijuana use sharply rose after the legalization of the drug. And in Denver, crime went up six percent.
Commissioners don't want to see that here.
