Utah Banks, Credit Unions Wary of Medical Marijuana Money

A Utah banking industry representative said the funds cannot go to banks, even when the state says medical marijuana is legal.

SALT LAKE CITY — (KUTV) — It’s a side of medical marijuana that has not had much light: Where will all the money made on medical cannabis in Utah go?

A Utah banking industry representative said the funds cannot go to banks, even when the state says—and this is coming—medical marijuana is legal.

“Under federal law, it’s still illegal,” said Howard Headlee, president of the Utah Bankers Association. “From a federal standpoint, it doesn’t matter what the state allows and doesn’t allow.”
