Hundreds of people lined up at the Libertine bar in Washington, D.C., Friday, to get free marijuana seeds, according to a report on Reason.com. The event was orchestrated by the DC Cannabis Campaign.

The campaign's Chairman, Adam Eidinger, told Reason, "This is the end of the Cannabis Campaign."

According to posts on Twitter, the event drew approximately 1,000 people and marked the launch of the era of marijuana legalization in the nation's capital. Voters in D.C. legalized marijuana during the November 2014 elections with the passage of Initiative 71. The initiative, which was approved by 70% of voters, legalized limited possession and home cultivation of marijuana for personal use. The sale of marijuana remains illegal.

While legalization took effect February 26, 2015, the effort has not been without significant controversy, as any D.C. legislation requires Congressional review–a process which became muddled over unclear language, buried in a spending bill, regarding the city's ability to enact the measure. Some House Republicans even wrote a letter to D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser suggesting she could face jail time if she allowed legalization to move forward, and launched an investigation into the City Council's legalization efforts.
