HALIFAX - The Canadian Real Estate Association proposes a delay in allowing Canadians to grow cannabis for recreational use until provincial governments can regulate how plants are grown.
The proposed federal Cannabis Act will allow an individual to grow up to four plants for personal use, but CREA suggests an amendment to halt home cultivation until provincial regulations can be enacted.
Michael Bourque, CEO of CREA, said before for the Senate Standing Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology that he sees a lot of concern about in-home marijuana cultivation.
"We know fire chiefs are concerned about fires; police organizations are concerned with increased crime; municipalities have concerns about safety and cost; health authorities are concerned about vulnerable people exposed to fungus and mould," Borque said.
CREA President Barb Sikkau said legalization comes with many potential pitfalls.
