Compliance is a daily chore for every cannabis business owner. From seed-to-sale tracking to meeting advertising and distribution requirements, it is easy for a few seemingly minor problems to slip through the cracks. But one place in which you do not want to fail compliance is meeting child-resistant packaging requirements.
Fortunately, many options exist, and the market for child-resistant packaging continues to expand. Here, Cannabis Business Times spotlights some leading child-resistant container (CRC) vendors and products, and shares some expert insights on purchasing child-resistant packaging.
FunkSac
FunkSac now offers a tamper-evident packaging option as an added level of security to its trademarked FunkGuardTM technology. Those packages are filled from the bottom, and a tear-off “hood” covers the opening mechanism, ensuring no children “accidentally” discover a consumer’s products.

CRATIV Packaging offers child-resistant and senior-friendly boxes to hold products. The company’s boxes meet the Child Resistant and Senior Adult Use Effectiveness criteria set forth by the Consumer Product Safety Commission as defined in 16 CFR 1700.20 – Testing Procedure for Special Packaging.
In addition to being child resistant, CRATIV Packaging is recyclable, and its shape promotes efficient storage as well as fits comfortably in a purchaser’s pocket. The CRATIV case comes in two sizes: Original and Mini. Prices range from $0.50 to $0.90 per package, depending on model and order size.
Kush Bottles
While it does offer consumer-focused products, Kush Bottles also offers many CRC options for cultivators. Pop-top bottles and pre-roll tubes, concentrate packaging, barrier bags and exit bags are all part of Kush Bottles’ child-resistant lineup.
Prices vary greatly depending on which product you want, its size, and the quantity you order. (Discounts are offered for larger orders.) The company’s mobile app also makes it easier for cultivators to put in orders on the go, and all Kush Bottles products can be customized to your company’s branding needs.
ABC Packaging/Stand Up Pouches
Standup Pouches’ flexible childproof bags are certified compliant with the ASTM International D3475 standards and use layers of flexible barrier film to lock in a product’s aroma, freshness, shape and structure while serving as a compliant storage option.
The bags feature a scientifically developed child-resistant lock at the top with comprehensive instructions to open; users must push the small lever up, then pull the zipper out and slide it across to access the product inside. To re-close, consumers push the zipper lock until they hear a “click” from the bottom lever. These extra steps are easy for adults to follow, but make it difficult for children to access what’s inside.
Cultivators can customize their packaging in eight different colors, or purchase a stock bag and apply a sticker label. (The company recommends the latter for startup companies strapped for cash).
eBottles.com
eBottles.com is an online retailer that serves the entire cannabis industry from its three distribution centers in Denver, Los Angeles, and Bethel, Conn.
eBottles has been granted design patent D781151 by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for its line of thick wall glass jars with symmetric child-resistant closures. The jars are available in 5-ml, 9-ml and 15-ml sizes, and were created with the particular needs of cannabis concentrates in mind. The insides of the jars are rounded, allowing heated concentrates to pool in the middle of the jar, providing the consumer the ability to gain easy access to all the valuable contents. The 5-ml jar has been well received by marketers of distillates, isolates and saps, the company said, while the 9-ml jar is popular with marketers of solid THC-based concentrates such as shatter and wax. eBottles also offers packaging for flower, edibles, tinctures and all other cannabis products.
Cannaline
Cannaline’s flexible child-resistant (CR) bags are tamper evident and certified for single use under CFR Title 16, Part 1700.20. They incorporate a proprietary mix of flexible barrier films that lock in freshness and aroma while serving as a viable CR storage option. The company offers custom printing and sizing with clear and/or opaque films at no additional charge (subject to minimum order quantities).
The dropper bottles have a built-in tamper-evident feature that eliminates the need for shrink bands (along with the bands’ added cost and labor). They are certified as child resistant using a “push and turn” closure, and are available in a variety of colors and sizes from 5 ml to 30 ml. Custom printing and/or labeling is also available with minimum order quantities.
