While cannabidiol (CBD) products have existed for many years in the legal cannabis market and the medicinal benefits of CBD are relatively well known, demand for CBD products has been exploding in both the recreational and medical markets over the past year. Most leading manufacturers of edibles, particularly chocolates, are now offering CBD-dominant products, many of which were launched in 2016.
However, according to Cannabis Business Times’ own “State of the Industry” report for 2016, only about a third of cannabis operations are currently focused on growing CBD-only and CBD-prominent strains, despite its popularity.
This demand will only continue to grow in 2017, as cannabis consumers become more educated about CBD. In a survey conducted by Brightfield Group among more than 700 medical marijuana patients throughout California in 2016, 34 percent prefer CBD-dominant products, 15 percent of prefer THC-dominant products, with the remainder using both products. Of those who prefer using CBD-dominant products, 74 percent use those that contain both CBD and THC, compared with 26 percent that use purely CBD products.
